The Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI) is seeking an energetic and well-organized team member to join our team as a Program Associate in the Center for Community Capacity Development. The associate will work with a collaborative of 25+ hospitals, 6 health departments and community stakeholders in Chicago and Cook County working to advance health equity. The ideal candidate will have experience working across sectors and in partnership with communities to address social determinants of health and advance health equity.
Full-time, 37.5 hours per week. Reports to and is accountable to the program manager in the Center for Community Capacity Development (CCCD).
Description of Illinois Public Health Institute
The Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI) mobilizes stakeholders, catalyzes partnerships, and leads action to promote prevention and improve public health systems in order to maximize health, health equity and quality of life for the people of Illinois. IPHI leads initiatives through the Center for Community Capacity Development, the Center for Health Information Technology, and the Center for Policy and Partnership Initiatives. Current projects in the Centers include: leading the national Data Across Sectors For Health (DASH) strategy to build communities’ ability to share data across sectors for community health; catalyzing, supporting and providing training and technical assistance to multi-sector community collaborative health improvement and health transformation initiatives; and conducting policy advocacy and systems initiatives to address obesity, nutrition, physical activity and chronic disease, including convening the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity.
This associate will be a key team member in staffing a collaborative of 25+ hospitals, 6 health departments, and community stakeholders in Chicago and Cook County. The collaborative is focused on addressing health inequities and improving population health through partnerships among healthcare providers, public health, and organizations addressing social/structural determinants of health and mental health.
In collaboration with the program manager and director of CCCD, the associate will help develop and execute strategy, budgets, and workplans to ensure all activities are of high quality and are completed on time. As a member of the CCCD team, the associate will contribute to development, design, and execution of program deliverables; provide day-to-day project management and execution; implement strategic communications; and cultivate and manage relationships with key collaborative partners.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Build, nurture, and maintain relationships with partners at government agencies, healthcare (hospitals, community mental health providers, FQHCs, MCOs, etc.), policy makers, stakeholder organizations, community based organizations, and funders.
- Coordinate the work of committees, workgroups, task forces and teams, including establishment of meeting schedules, recruitment and participant communication.
- Facilitate in-person and online meetings and engagement events to accomplish project goals, including coordinating with partners, creating agendas, researching background information, creating meeting materials, and documenting meeting content, results, and action steps.
- Implement meeting follow-up actions, including coordinating with key project partners and leaders to develop and implement program goals, strategies and tasks.
- Recruit and provide guidance and support to interns and volunteers to assist with program implementation.
- Build, nurture, and maintain relationships with partners in sectors related to social/structural determinants including: for instance, workforce and economic development, education, criminal justice, housing, transportation, racial equity, and food systems.
- Develop and implement external communications with current and potential partners, stakeholders, funders, and state and national healthcare and public health leaders through production and dissemination of e-newsletters, reports, white papers, fact sheets, press materials, web-site content and other strategies.
- Identify, research and report on relevant evidence-based state, local and national public policies, systems and environmental change interventions using both the scholarly literature and the experience and content provided through national and state organizations.
- Assist in data collection and analysis (e.g. secondary datasets, interviews, focus groups, and surveys) and prepare visual and narrative summaries of qualitative and quantitative data for reports.
- Gather data and information from key informants and experts through both formal and informal networking strategies.
- Respond to stakeholder inquires and communications.
- Represent IPHI at stakeholder and partner meetings.
Program maintenance and development
- Prepare and submit periodic, special and annual programmatic reports, and financial reports in collaboration with program manager, other team members and financial staff.
- Supervise development and maintenance of participant, stakeholder, partner, media and policy-maker database.
- Assist in grant writing and other philanthropic resource and business development work.
- Assist with programmatic budget development and monitoring.
- Other duties and tasks as assigned.
- The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree or equivalent professional experience in a field related to health and human services or community and economic development such as: public health, urban planning, healthcare administration, public administration, or public policy with a minimum of five years’ work experience in project management and program implementation.
- Existing relationships and experience working and living in communities impacted by health inequities in Chicago and/or Cook County is highly valued for this position.
- Candidates should have demonstrated experience working across sectors and in partnership with communities to address social determinants of health and advance health equity.
- Candidates should have experience developing and implementing strategic communications across multiple platforms.
- Candidates with experience working at the intersections of clinical care, population health, and community engagement are encouraged to apply.
- Candidates should have the ability to work independently and as part of project teams; must be able to work with minimum supervision in the conceptualization, planning, management, and implementation of organizational and program activities.
- Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, and social media is required. Experience with customer relationship management (CRM) software, web page development, GIS, and/or Adobe Creative Suite is desirable.
- The successful candidate will be able to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, be comfortable in a fast-paced environment, and able to adapt to change and growth.
- Must have a driver’s license and ability to access a car or be qualified to rent a car.
- Must be able to sit at and operate a computer and other office equipment for a significant portion of the workday.
- Must be able to move about the office and at offsite events to access files, supplies, and assist with event set up.
- The position requires occasional work on evenings or weekends. And, the associate must be able to travel for one or more nights from time to time.
- The position requires frequent communication with internal and external customers about program activities. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
Compensation: $62,000 – $65,000, depending on experience and qualifications. Competitive benefits including health and dental insurance, sick and vacation time, and 403(B) retirement match.
Location: The position is located in Chicago at the IPHI office.
